Caswell County Courthouse: "In God We Trust"

Historic Caswell County Courthouse to Have "In God We Trust" on the Facade

This unanimous decision by the Caswell County Board of Commissioners was posted earlier. Here is the article from "The Caswell Messenger":

"The Caswell Messenger" (Yanceyville, North Carolina), 18 March 2015

[Caswell County] Commissioners unanimously approved an outside proposal to display the words "In God We Trust" on the exterior of the local government center.

The proposal, presented by Fred McClure of the U.S. Motto Action Committee, invited Caswell to join up to 20 other North Carolina counties who have recently moved to display the national motto on the outside of their own government centers.

McClure said installation costs for the metal emblems have ranged from $1,800 to $2,300. Local expenses would be paid through donations at no cost to the county. The emblem, which at other sites has measured from 12 to 25 inches tall, would appear on both the historic courthouse and the presently-used facility.

"This is a pushback against the wave trying to take patriotism out of the constitution and our lives," he said.

"These are the values the country was founded on and it sends a message."

Commissioners had few questions on the matter, other than possible guidelines which might be required since the historic courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
"I think it speaks for itself," said commissioner Larry Hamlett.

McClure noted that the issue had been the subject of multiple lawsuits filed in recent years by the American Civil Liberties Union, and would not create any legal challenges for the county over matters regarding the separation of church and state.

  1. As a tax payer in Caswell Co I was disheartened to see this happen. My family for more than 20 years even loaned antique furniture for use at the courthouse and jail behind it. This is a registered historical landmark that has been illegally altered by a political and religious group to meet an agenda.
